      Concert Review:

La Doña at the Constellation Room, Santa Ana, Southern California

by Aztec Parrot, host of Radio Aztlán on Fridays from 8pm – 10pm (PST)

In English, La Doña means the well respected woman of the house. On Wednesday night at the
Constellation Room in Santa Ana, La Doña proved why that name befits her best. She and her
multi-versatile scaled down quartet of musicians brought a treasure full of genres to play with as La Doña transformed the room into a playground filled with fun and dance.

Her 12 song set flexed it’s versatility from the beginning with the doo wop group harmony of
“Loser Girl,” and plenty of the songs from her latest release “Can’t Eat Clout”, an independent
production which reflects her La Misíon Chicana strength and drive. Her musical career began
early in her life growing up in a musical family and community household. So she feels
comfortable on stage as bandleader and arranger. Her confidence rings strongest when she
embraces the vibe between her band members. They perform in a tranquil constitution as their
instruments speak lovely sounds that bridge people together through music. Along with her
salsa cumbia reggaeton style of dance floor shakers, she included a cover of “Sabor A Mi”, the
classic bolero for lovers and those who ever loved.

In “Cuando Se Van”, the opening montuno rhythm morphs into a Middle Eastern dabke while La
Doña throws un grito “¡Que Viva Palestina!” and pleas for a cease fire. What insures for the rest
of the evening is a barrage of Bay Area hyphy beats collaged with cumbia, tejano blues with
soul, and what La Doña declares “I can do whatever the fuck I want!” And what she did was
sing to us in the caring manner of a beloved teacher. Her confidence and stage presence has
been refined over years while she performed with La Familia Govea and various Bay Area
groups in and out of San Francisco’s Mission District. And the multiple influences from Doo
Wop, dembow, hyphy, cumbia, and even Middle Eastern when mixed together can not only
produce an uplifting feeling of newness but also a dance floor sense of hope for the world. That
is her magic and medicine. If giving hope and a good time is her magic, let La Doña run the
      house!

Humbly beginning in 2015, the band played shows in friends yards, pools, and backyards gradually amassing a cult following that has stuck by through the years and watched climb to their current peak. HALLOWEEN COSTUME ETIQUETTE:

In preparation for our upcoming Halloween concert at The Barn, we’d like to emphasize the importance of respectful Halloween costume choices. Maintaining a positive and considerate atmosphere for all attendees, including students, faculty, staff, customers, and fellow concert-goers, is essential. To ensure everyone has an enjoyable time, please adhere to the following costume guidelines:

Cultural Sensitivity: Please refrain from wearing any costumes that may be considered culturally offensive. It’s essential to show respect for diverse backgrounds and traditions.

Avoid Controversy: We kindly ask that you avoid divisive or controversial costume choices related to current news topics. Costumes intended to dismiss or humiliate public figures, such as presidents or government officials, may need to be better received. Remember, humor is subjective, and what’s funny to one person may not be to another.

Be Mindful of Others: While funny costumes can be a hit, it’s crucial not to create humor at someone else’s expense. Offensive costumes aren’t limited to cultural appropriation or sacrilegious themes. For instance, costumes that mock pregnancy can be hurtful to individuals who are currently or have been pregnant.

No Masks or Weapons Allowed: For the safety and comfort of all attendees, please do not wear masks or bring any weapons, real or imitation, to the event. This ensures a secure environment and prevents any potential misunderstandings or concerns.

By following these guidelines, we can ensure that everyone has a fantastic time at the Halloween concert and enjoy the spirit of the season without causing discomfort or offense to anyone. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. We look forward to celebrating Halloween together at The Barn.

FRI OCTOBER 20TH * KUCR NIGHT FEATURING: SURELY TEMPO + COLD CUT + INTEGRA PINK + KUCR DJS

FREE ENTRY WITH PRE-REGISTRATION. Click here to RSVP!

      SURELY TEMPO:

Surely Tempo is an Indie Rock band based out of Santa Ana, California. The band’s sound is a mix of garage rock, indie rock, and alternative rock. The four piece band consists of frontman and rhythm guitarist Alex Johnathan Martinez, Bassist Raymond Pardo, Lead guitarist David Ismodes, and Drummer Paul Florindo. The group was formed in August 2020 and their debut EP “Days So Bitter, Yet So Sweet” was released on October 31, 2020. The group’s sound comes from many different influences and from many different genres.

      COLD CUT:

Cold Cut, comprised of drummer Brian Santiago, bassist Lou Blackwood, and frontman Elmar Chavarria, came together in 2018, taking little time to command the attention of music lovers young and old. The Southern Californian three-piece has crafted a standout sound by seamlessly fusing spine-chilling shrieks of the Mississippi Delta, ear-ringing riffs of ’70’s era Sunset Boulevard, and rumbling rock-‘n’-roll rhythms into catchy ear candy.

      INTEGRA PINK:

Integra Pink draws influence from the lengthy history of Rock music and adds a contemporary touch to their sound, producing a distinctive fusion that sets them apart from the competition. Strong guitar riffs, catchy melodies, and thoughtful lyrics that explore the depths of human experience are what make their music stand out. Integra Pink’s versatility as musicians is demonstrated by their ability to transition easily between thrashing rock songs and introspective ballads.
