FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Riverside, CA — KUCR 88.3fm’s long-running Comedy Apocalypse series returns to the Barn on Wednesday February 27th at 8pm when award-winning comedian Jimmy Dore presents a night of his brand of uproarious ultra-hip, ultra-smart comedy in a hilarious new 2013 edition of the acclaimed stage and club show “Left, Right & Ridiculous!.” In this show, Dore’s spot-on humor takes apart today’s media, politics and culture in a sharp no-holds-barred raucous blend that combines stand-up, sketch and video to hilarious effect. In one of the great features of the show, “Left, Right & Ridiculous!” sets the world right with lots of hard-to-believe video clips of famous people saying and doing some of the dumbest stuff you’ve ever seen.
Jimmy Dore is the star of several Comedy Central Specials, a writer/performer for the Off-Broadway hit “The Marijuana-Logues”, and the host of “The Jimmy Dore Show, a satirical news show which originates from KPFK Los Angeles and airs nationally on the Pacifica Network, and on the web for The Young Turks Network. Jimmy’s, “Citizen Jimmy”, is the award winning one-hour Comedy Central Special that was chosen Best Of the Year by iTunes and Top 5 DVD’s of the year by Punchline Magazine. Talking comedy with other comedians has always been a passion for Jimmy, so he turned it into the popular podcast “Comedy & Everything Else”, which has recently surpassed 2.2 million downloads, the guest list for which boasts the biggest names in comedy today. The LA Weekly compared Dore to the legendary father of modern comedy: “Dore is so sharp and so funny and so on target, Lenny Bruce has to be laughing in his grave.”
Dore’s “Left, Right and Ridiculous!” is opened by three great touring club comics at the top of their game doing killer stand-up sets who then join Jimmy at the end of the show for an improvised comedy “panel discussion” as they skewer today’s newsmakers, ridicule the ridiculous, and make fun of celebrities and politicians – all the while taking questions from the audience.
The show also features:
Gene Pompa, comedian and writer, was born in East Los Angeles, California. Pompa became a product of his multiethnic upbringing in the suburbs of Los Angeles, and it was this diverse background which ultimately inspired Pompa to incorporate universal themes into his stand-up comedy and writing. Pompa’s television credits include several appearances on NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien and CBS’ The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn. Pompa has also starred in his own half-hour Comedy Central Presents special, as well as a half-hour comedy showcase on Si TV. His acting has been featured on FOX’s In Living Color, CBS’ Style & Substance, and The Brothers Garcia on Nickelodeon. You may have also seen Pompa on Showtime, HBO, MTV, mun2, Galavision, and the Game Show Network.
Brooklyn native, Dwayne Perkins, is a young veteran of the comedy game. With appearances on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, andPremium Blend, Perkins has earned a spot in today’s class of elite stand-up comics. Perkins is a regular in the New York, Boston, and Los Angeles comedy clubs. The recent culmination of Perkins’ talent has resulted in his own Comedy Central Presents half-hour special. The very well received special showcases Perkins’ unique way of looking at life and unparalleled ability to convey it hilariously.
Robert Yasumura is a comedian and actor who has performed at the prestigious Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater in Massachusetts; been a Main Company member at the ACME Comedy Theater in Hollywood; performed stand-up comedy at The Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, OR, the Hollywood Improv, Flappers and many other venues. He is a regular performer and writer for The Jimmy Dore Show on the Pacifica Radio Network. Follow him on Twitter @teamyasumura.
The “Comedy Apocalypse” is the longest running comedy series in UCR history and has featured dozens of comics over the last four years at UCR’s Barn. According to KUCR’s Louis Vandenberg, “We wanted to bring comedy to the campus – real cutting-edge club comedy which you would see in Hollywood or New York City. The idea of the ‘apocalypse’ name was that the show always would be at the end of the quarter when the students are pouring themselves into their schoolwork and in need of a break. Also, putting “comedy” before “apocalypse” just sounds ridiculous, so it had to be done.” To find the performers for the series, the KUCR 88.3fm staff reviews dozens of videos for several weeks before putting the diverse shows together. Jimmy Dore has been a top staff favorite. KUCR Student Manager Jenny Guzman said, “I’m so excited! Dore is a perfect comic for the UCR college audience. He is incredibly funny, quick and smart. He is the first comic we’ve had return to the Apocalypse. People loved him when he played here a year ago.”
